Classical Singing 1
Classical Singing 1 will enable you to reveal your hidden talent - developing skills, techniques and knowledge in the art of classical singing. Under the guidance of a practicing artist and educator, you will gain a solid foundation from which to take your singing further, enabling you to maximise your enjoyment, while developing a solid technique that will serve all styles from classical to music theatre, contemporary and jazz.
This course is designed to provide a thorough introduction to classical singing technique, including physiology of the voice, breathing, air support, voice projection, consistent vocal production and tone, range, vibrato and posture. Through different styles of music from baroque through to 21st century, participants will gain experience with both solo and group performance styles, as well as a broad historical overview of classical music. Aural awareness will be improved through ensemble singing, and techniques for performance practice and dealing with performance anxiety will be addressed. Led by Trevor Maitland, a graduate from the VCA in 2010, Maitland has performed with the Victorian Opera, Orchestra Victoria, the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra , the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and numerous productions with Opera Australia, most recently including 'Don Carlos' and the 'Ring Cycle'. In 2010 Trevor premiered the role of Filbert in the world premiere of Stuart Greenbaum's opera 'The Parrot Factory' at the Malthouse Theatre. Maitland has taught classical singing since 2010, having taught privately and at schools such as Geelong Grammar.
